A Howe Book You’ll Want
MAJ James Merritt 1917’s first wife was the sister of Halsey Davidson 1920; he wrote “School Days” about his life at Howe 1916-20.
Brian ’90 informs me that we have a carton or more of these marvelous books in the memorabilia that Eleni ’04 rescued. The entire book is set in a typeface that mimics cursive writing, if it is not Halsey’s actual hand, so if you are challenged by cursive (see back cover below), be warned. This book has fascinating detail about life at Howe during World War One. Davidson later was a Detroit vice-president of the Campbell-Ewald Co., the ad agency for Chevrolet, according to his 1985 obit. He wrote the 200-page book in 1978-79 during his retirement in Arizona.
If you want a copy (highly recommended) please tell Jean Miller jmiller@hmsalumni.org to reserve your copy.
Cost: $18.84 per copy plus $1.35 shipping (founded 1884 for 135 years memory aid). Mail a check for $20.19 (the year Howe closed) to the South Bend address in the footer or donate $20.19 on the donations page with the note “Halsey book.”
Our mailroom is only staffed part-time, so be patient. Our thanks to Alice Snyder, granddaughter of MAJ Merritt, for alerting us to her great-uncle’s book.
