Brochures
Here are various Howe School™ publications that served as yearbooks and alumni bulletins through the years.
Howe School Annual 1914
The 1914 Howe School Annual has the first version (green, gold, and red) of the Howe School crest embossed on its cover. Seniors in their Class Photo are in caps and gowns; the individual Senior Photos are in civilian attire. The Middle School is in uniform. A vehement whole-page lecture forbids the use of tobacco by faculty and cadets. The detailed Commencement program evokes nostalgia for the politeness of the day. The GR&I RR map is on the back cover.
Howe School 1915
The 1915 Howe Quarterly sample is the Alumni Number, with a photo and obituary of Howe School’s first Rector, The Rev. Charles Nelson Spaulding. The first print description of the just-completed Mothers’ Chapel lists the first honorees named on the bronze tablets on the south wall. The stairway to the Crypt addition and the Calvary group over the west door to the Mothers’ Chapel are shown. The Alumni Roster includes updated post-Howe biographies of most alums with class group pictures. The detailed bios and class photos continued at least through the 1954 edition, which was 3/4-inch thick. The dinners of Howe Clubs of Detroit, Fort Wayne, Chicago, and Harvard University, were reported.
Howe Review Summer 2003
The Summer 2003 Howe Review has an article by our First Vice President, Eleni Mitropoulos-D’Andrea ’04, about being a female cadet. The 50th Anniversary of the Class of 1953 and their gift of the Jeep used to review the Corps at parades are described. A long list of donors and their level of giving is impressive, as is the $671,108 total giving to the School during Fiscal Year 2002-2003. No one in 2003 would have predicted the School closing in 2019.
Howe Review July 2018
The 2018 Howe Review bravely portrays a future for Howe that didn’t happen. Excellent color photography throughout the publication documents life at Howe as it approached its last School year. A $75,000 gift for a new weight room and fitness equipment was the only donation listed.
Alumni Bulletin Spring 1969
The 1969 Alumni Bulletin has a photo of the Ray Herrick bronze statue, that stood in front of the Administration Building, on the upper left of its cover. An article describes the rifle team winning the Indiana state championship and representing the Fifth Army in the Army National Match. Superintendent Kelly answers questions about the effect of Vietnam War protests on military schools. Total alumni giving of $9715 reported, which would be $81,642 in 2024 dollars.
